The Fire Festivals of the Solstices in the Pyrenees

The nomination of the Fire Festivals of the Summer Solstice in the Pyrenees for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity brought together 63 towns from Andorra (3), Spain (26), and France (34) that celebrate this shared tradition.

Five years after gaining UNESCO recognition, concerns about the proper safeguarding of these festivals remain among the festival practitioners, especially considering the changes brought about by their inclusion on the list.

Within this context, the Prometheus project was launched to enhance awareness of this shared heritage across the three countries. By building on research conducted at universities and cultural research centres in the region, the project aims to increase appreciation, respect, and enjoyment of these traditions.

To achieve this, various educational and outreach activities have been designed around the Fire Festivals of the Solstices in the Pyrenees.
