Since 2008, the students of the Galceran de Pinós School (Bagà) have been producing a magazine with a monographic theme, either quarterly or annually. In the 2012-2013 school year, the publication focused on the Berguedà region, and each educational cycle had to work on a different aspect.
At a time when the UNESCO candidacy for the “Fia-faia” festival was being prepared, the children from the first and second Early Primary Cycle carried out an interdisciplinary project on the Fia-faia, which was later published in the pages of the magazine.
For about a month, they worked on everything related to the tradition.
On one hand, they received a visit from a “faiaire” from the region, who explained many things to them. They had previously held an assembly to determine what they would like to ask. On the other hand, they visited an elderly care home in the town, where two people taught them the process of constructing a “faia.” Both activities provided notes or conclusions.
Similarly, the tradition was worked on in all subjects: in Spanish, they analysed the event programs of the festival from different years and then created a new proposal for that year’s edition. In Mathematics, they measured a “faia” and made comparisons, in Social Studies, they wrote a historical text and analysed the typical layout of the “faia” on the night of the “faies.”
Each child created a small dossier with everything they worked on and learned.

The project is explained from page 11 to 15.
The students got to know their social and cultural environment through people from the village, external to the school.
On the day the festival was celebrated, the students were able to participate more actively, understand its origin and meaning, and ultimately enjoy it more intensely.
The project itself is interesting but so is creating a magazine with the whole school.
To carry out a similar activity, one could contact the Regional Archive of the area or a nearby ethnographic museum, as they can certainly provide information and/or ideas.
