The inscription of the Fire Festivals of the Summer Solstice in the Pyrenees on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2015 granted this tradition international recognition. However, this also entailed a clear commitment to its safeguarding, ensuring that the tradition remains alive without diminishing its function or social value.
For this reason, it is essential to develop a document that facilitates the sustainable management of the festival for its practitioners—a safeguarding model that serves as a working guide. To create this model, the project draws on the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for Intangible Cultural Heritage, which compiles various international programs proposing diverse safeguarding measures, all recognized by UNESCO.
As an initial safeguarding action for the fire festivals, the project began with the design and pilot implementation of the “Maleta Fallaire” (Fire Festival Kit).
